Thomas Hart Benton. Cradling Wheat, 1938.
There was something here before me, just barely dusted over below the surface when I was born, but already out of sight. I never knew it clearly. I want to see it now, now that the chaotic surface of my own days is dying down and I'm beginning to sink into the layers myself. Before I rest, I would like the truth, all the way down: vernacular faith, Crockett, sorghum, 'shine, Isle Dernière, gingham, arrowheads, riverbeds, earlier to black.
