In LOTR, all the threads supported Frodo's efforts to destroy the ring. In The Hobbit, Bilbo is the MC—until he isn't. It's all subjective, of course, but I felt there were pointless threads and long parts that existed because they were an opportunity for excessive CGI. 🤔
