Every wallet handles this situation differently. It never really times out, but eventually nodes will drop/stop relaying the transaction if it never goes through AND higher-fee transactions are there to take up that same space.
If you have a tx stuck, you can accelerate it using a tool like mempool.space, some wallets offer acceleration as well.
