Big day for the ravens! There was a drowned rat in the trough so I tossed it out for the quarkers. Then I had to deal with the chore I always forget about - defrosting a hose. I ended up using one of those really lame little expandable fabric hoses - all the sturdy hoses are clogged with ice. At least I remembered to bring it in the house (and it does shrivel up to fit in a small bucket very neatly!)
Waiting for the trough to fill was pretty cold (-5c), but at least it’s not windy. And I got to watch the equines have a little old-married-squabble, which is always fun.
I give them pellet food and special low starch hay at every meal. Miss D always claims the bowl of pellets, and Samwise always heads for the pile of hay product. Breakfast is one of the two meals where they get what I call The Good Stuff (it’s Platinum Performance, a powdered supplement). I just dump a scoop on her pellets and a half scoop on his hay. They gobble up the good stuff in two bites and then munch on the rest of their breakfast.
The pellets bowl lives by the water trough, and Miss D snorted and retreated when I dropped the thrashing hose into the trough. Samwise watched to make sure I was staying there to supervise the hose and moved in on the pellets. D was instantly offended and came straight back in, ears pinned. The donkey let out a tiny squeal and kept his hind cannons rotated toward her, but mostly it was just posturing and body-blocking. She finally got mad, snapped at his flank, dodged the return kick, and went to go eat the hay instead. Victory for the donkey!
