I went out of the way to meet a wise woman once while visiting another city. She had published, what I thought, was a profound paper and was also a great musician. She had run into the standard sort of difficulties in grad school in frictions with an advisor and was suffering from losses in vision which made it difficult for her to work. I would've killed to have done work that was just 1% as good as hers, her difficulties relative to mine seemed so unjust.
She told me how she liked to think that the music we associate with various countries reflects aspects of spoken language and culture. It's a compelling idea when I think of stereotypes from Germany, France etc.
I just discovered Konarak Reddy, jesus christ is he great. He reminded me of my trip to meet the wise woman as he describes the emphasis on melody in Indian music. There isn't much emphasis on harmony, much like how you see in the daily life on the streets in India.
