Soapbox is just a front end for Pleroma, forked from Gab, which in turn was forked from Mastodon.
As for Pleroma itself, well... It had the potential to set things straight. It was written with ActivityPub in mind before the spec was even officially published, but initially federated only through OStatus (like Mastodon did). It had momentum, but then things slowed down and eventually... kinda stopped. Now it only seems to get updates whenever someone finds a new exploit.
Don't get me wrong, I like Lain, he's a chill guy, very smart too, but it's painfully obvious he's not really the best fit for a project leader. Having to tard wrangle all the egos of Pleroma's dev team ("Wait, do we even have a team????") probably burned him out too.
Nostr is completely different beast, and the only reason we even see its content here is because of a bridge that Alex Gleason made.
