Compared to solar+storage (especially the amount and quality of solar available by 2040), fusion is never going to be commercially viable, full stop. If commercial fusion had been able to turn a profit a decade ago, it might have stood a chance (and ditto small modular fission tractors). But at this point, solar is just going to steamroll every other energy source, because it's just so darn easy to scale it up.
