It helps to frame it differently: there is no "they", only "us".
I stopped listening to stuff like this years ago because it's all just fear porn designed to grab your attention and ends up empowering the system more (even if wrapped up in investigative journalism).
"The people" at "the top" are simply following incentive systems laid out in front of everyone and they are the best at it. Humans always cheat when possible and those best at it would naturally gravitate towards positions of power where cheating is not punished (empty voter promises) or even outright rewarded (insider trading).
>it really makes me despair to learn these things, because as a normal person with no influence, I don't know what I can do to make any difference in my future.
The beautiful thing is: just holding #bitcoin **is already enough** on an individual level.
Yes there is more an individual can do, such as moving their time to the new system: applying their skills and sharing their knowledge with others but holding bitcoin already removes the ability of inflation from stealing your purchasing power.
Anytime a group tries to use the moneyprinter (bailout, gov spending, buying votes with subsidies, etc.) you will be protected from it - additionally you also profit from the asymmetry in knowledge about #bitcoin.
There is no one who truly understood bitcoin and then said "no, let me go back to the old, broken system and be stolen from for the rest of my life". Therefore it will continue to grow and with it's growth also change the incentive of the overall system.
>They also talk about how Bitcoin is not free of this influence, which makes perfect sense.
Bitcoin L1 works no matter who tried or tries to ban it.
If some companies and/or governments tries to manipulate it by using leverage they'll wipe themselves out like FTX.
The best thing you can do is to deeply understand bitcoin yourself (not sure how deep you already are) and once you understand it and protected yourself, start spreading it to your family & friends to help protect them.
