1. The Ocean is Big (and it's hard to find things in the oceans)
2. The Woods are Big (and it's hard to find people in the woods)
3. The human mind and imagination are powerful
4. Memories are malleable, and this is true of even serious and "sober" people
5. Scientists are desperate to the the first to show off evidence of Strange Things and will fight each other for the chance. Ain't nobody covering up anything crazy.
