I'd compartmentalize. Make the bathroom bright and modern. The kitchen colorful and retro. The living room dark and gloomy. Stuff like that.
An ex of mine chose a different color to paint the walls in each of the rooms in our first apartment, and it was a revelation. It set a different mood for each room, and things started to become significantly easier to select from that point onward.
