With time and distance I can admit that my initial bad reaction to learning about the concept of trans people existing was mostly about a deep fear that by talking about or even thinking about such things it might rub off on me somehow. That I might get lumped in with people outside of what was normal.
I couldn't understand and did not bother to think about why anyone would risk such social death.
But I was wrong. About everything.
