I was also shocked when my son needed braces. I think cost was $5,000 15 years ago. Dental insurance had a lifetime maximum braces benefit. Not even an annual benefit. I think the benefit was $2,000 but maybe just $1,000.

One other benefit of dental insurance is that if your dentist is part of their network then the cost for any procedure is capped (no pun intended) by the insurance company.
