I think nintendo gets too much praise for taking a game and literally never iterating on it
when they do make a new game or have an unexpected twist on somthing, it is NOTABLY unpopular. I wouldnt even call it
i think its also part due to execs using the internet as a vector for market research. If you do any business 101 type class this is the part that get glossed over. The toplevel internet is saturated by the prevalent opinion vs the niche opinion (tends to be binary, but thats a statistics phenomena i dont care to talk about) and when you combine the majority of marketing through internet services, as well as games being an inherently digital form-factor, you get this.
and on the nintendo stint too, again, nintendo doesnt release genre spins or new games specifically because they perform less (sales-wise) than flagship titles
