I just learned about the notion of deixis. The function of deictic words is to anchor language to reality (I, you, this, today, etc.).

This made me think of computer science. In some paradigms, there are "pure functions" (functions that only perform computations), and "functions with side effects" (functions that interact with the real world, like display some text, read or write a file or the internet).

Is there a real link between deixis and side effects?
