So I was playing with this nice flex playground, and it revealed a gap in my understanding. (I have a *lot* of those around CSS.) Starting from the playground defaults, if you change `align-items` to `stretch`, they stretch all the way down as expected. But if you then change `flex-direction` to `column`, they *don't* stretch all the way across. Why is that?
