on sharkey, when you mute a person, none of their posts will show up in your timeline, and neither will any direct replies to their posts (though replies in a chain that aren't a direct reply will still show up)
if you mute an entire instance using the instance mute feature, it just does not do anything, when someone you follow boosts a post from the muted instance, it still shows up in your timeline, if someone replies to a post from a muted instance it still shows up.
and with word mutes, they don't actually mute, it only ever replaces it with a "$user said something" prompt that can be clicked through to see what was posted, which isn't the same as muting
the exact same terminology is used to refer to wildly different behaviour by the different systems
and none of them actually work in the way you'd expect
