yeah, my understanding of it is that yes indeed it is made primarily from carbon, and there is variants that are often labeled "QLED" which include a nanomaterial called "quantum dots" which act like your usual phosphors but are composed of a broad spectral response and create much flatter spectral curves than your typical electron-activated luminance (eg, zinc sulfate or sodium vapor or neon or argon)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OLED

they are pretty and have a big advantage that they consume energy in proportion with the luminance of the display, which makes them very good for portable devices but also allows you to limit the blue spectrum

they are probably the most mature common form of LED based display systems and i owned an early device back in like 2011 or so from Samsung, and there was numerous variations at the time and i remember one display tech made by panasonic had a yellow element to it

they are definitely better than reflective/transflective TFT based tech, but the brightness has a big disadvantage in daylight

for sure it will be my next buy when i'm getting a display device... i'm almost certain i am going to have to abandon much of the tech i have accumulated in recent times when i relocate, which i'm pretty much certain is going to happen in coming months
