When I was was a child, I was the weird loner, in a time where things like social anxiety, beng on the spectrum etc. tended not to be diagnosed. You just got diagnosed as a “weirdo” and basically ostracized. I was a “weirdo” and as a result, I never learned social skills all that well, and what I did manage to learn never came naturally; it was like learning a second language, instead of the art and game of social relations being like a mother tongue. If I try hard I can fake it.
