Any homebrewers out there that brew #Altbier ?

Our local homebrew supply store has stopped carrying de-bittered black malt (yikes). The owner said that in small quantities it is just adding color. If that is the case, I’m pondering just using a darker crystal malt instead of the medium crystal malt I have been using, up to this point. Thoughts?
