In Amritsar, India, master craftsmen carve chess pieces in a tradition that dates back 1,500 years. "Each set is a collective labor of love, with every component handcrafted by a man who specializes in one type of chess piece," writes Atlas Obscura's Roxanne Hoorn, who spoke to knight maker Surinder Pal about his work, and to Rishi Sharma, CEO of manufacturing company Chess Empire, about the industry's future, and the expertise that goes into making a set. “The person who is making the queen, we don’t give him the pawn. Otherwise, he’s going to ruin it,” he says.
