The “hidden oligarchy” or whoever it is that holds the true power on our little sphere isn’t after “profits” or “money”. Money is useful only if it is used to gain control over something - a country, a faith, or a box of Oreos.

Those holding power don’t need money - they already have the power. What they want is to ensure that they never lose that power. They confiscate things like beaches or palaces or boxes of Oreos without ever spending a penny for them.

Those in power may produce trinkets in the form of paper money, electronic entries or whatever, any time they want. “oh the paperboy is here - toss him some more of those trinkets he seems to love so much”.

The proles, even the “powerful” ones like world “leaders”, fight over those trinkets, but they will never take power from the already powerful. Some even store the trinkets and amass lots and lots of them, and they will exchange them for boxes of Oreos, dozens of “valuable” vehicles and maybe even a “private” island or two. But they will never have the power that those already in control already possess. Their islands could be sacked in an instant by a band of mercenaries. Their vehicles could be destroyed or confiscated. Their Oreos will go stale. Maybe. What’s the half-life of an Oreo?

Perishables aside, the proles don’t have sovereign power over anything. A few trinkets tossed here and there will be enough to relieve any of them of their “possessions”. That’s true power.

The money-go-round is a game. A laser pointer to ensure that the cat remains consumed in activities that aren’t dangerous to the owner’s control. Because even without any money at all, those who hold the power know that their possession is potentially in just as much jeopardy as a prole’s box of Oreos.

8 billion is a lot of souls. If they ever figure out the money scam, that even the powerful aren’t intrinsically superior to anyone else, the power will be lost forever. Extreme measures are taken every day to ensure that never happens. Depopulation through direct or indirect means, like war, pestilence, denutrifying the food supply, incongruous “health” initiatives - the weapons of war are numerous and even better, may be deployed solely by only one side of the war. The war of the powerful versus the proles. The only war that truly exists.
