For what it's worth, and considering the version of Paris as shown in this game is already kind of an idealized fantasy version of the city, I would set it in a proper fantasy setting, do away with gender restrictions, and maybe introduce some further fantasy tropes into the game.
Do they really have to duel with swords all the time for example? Why not have magic duels for example.
The dueling system also is rather lackluster, maybe that would be better dealt with in a different ruleset.
