As a child the black barbershop was a phenomenon to me. Older black men talking about politics, sports, news, and black people. My fondest memories were going to the barbershop with my Dad. It was like this social gathering where black men were allowed to express their blackness as it was and so unlike our portrayal on TV. I'm listening to Thelonious Monk and it brings back memories because Jazz was a staple in black barbershops in my generation.
