Day 44 on the series from TCM’s book “The Essentials: 52 Must-See Movies and Why They Matter Volume 1” by Jeremy Arnold.

“Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb” (1964) co-written, produced, and directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Peter Sellers in three roles, including the title character. Also starring George C. Scott, Sterling Hayden, Keenan Wynn, and Slim Pickens.

WHY IT’S AN ESSENTIAL
“If the mark of a clever comedy is successfully making unfunny topics funny, ‘Dr. Strangelove’ takes the cake. After all, is there a less-funny subject than nuclear war? Stanley Kubrick actually had an eye toward making a serious, suspenseful drama when he first plunged into making a movie out of the novel ‘Red Alert’. But as he researched the world of thermonuclear war and the accidental ways in which one might start, he found that many of the possibilities were so preposterous as to be comical. They were also the most ‘truthful,’ he later told writer Joseph Gelmis. ‘So it occurred to me that.. the only way to tell the story was as a black comedy or, better, a nightmare comedy.’

“Kubrick originally planned—and filmed—a climactic pie fight to end all pie fights. He spent a week shooting it, and Scott later said they ‘shot a thousand pies a day.’ But Kubrick decided the scene was too farcical for the movie overall, and he cut it. That deleted scene is the reason one can still see a long table full of pies and desserts at one end of the war room.” (p. 225, 227)
