One of my first jobs was a SysAdmin on duty watching after monitoring systems in a large hosting provider. I have my share of scary stories but also proud moments on that job :)
If you think you will do it better while self-hosting, go for it. It is a personal choice and personal commitment.
I know i won't. And I hope that by paying a provider, which is a Platinum partner for Nextcloud, I also support the Nextcloud development a little bit.
