The work around is to say it never happened, there was some, until now unrealized, defect in the marriage. But then if it never was a marriage you are going to wind up with lots of illegitimate children (which means less today than it used to, but still has effects) and no one wanted that. So, they proceeded to wrap themselves in the most convoluted rhetorical backflips to come to the desired conclusion... Marriage never happened, parents still tithing members of church, and children somehow legitimate. It really looks like they looked at their theological constraints, chose the desired end state, then reasoned they're way backwards to make it so.
