Of all Jacob Riis's photos in his book, "How the Other Half Lives", one that I have always found particularly disturbing is this 1889 photo of a 12-year-old boy--he claimed he was 16--pulling threads In A New York City garment sweatshop.
Is the boy's face black and blue or did what appears to be bruises have something to do with the way the photo was taken, making his face look bruised? One thing for sure, the conditions were abominable.
