It’s now at the point where it’s a better idea to buy a projector than a flat panel TV. Why do I say this?
1- Dumb TVs are no longer a thing. Almost every one of them asks for an Internet connection. I don’t want my TV to be connected to the Internet for many various reasons. On the other hand, most projectors a dumb—at the high and low end.
2- Projectors are now more affordable than TVs. You can get one for as low as $80. Mind you, there are trade-offs. But cheap TVs also have trade-offs too.
3- At the high end, projector technology has advanced far enough that it has good fidelity even in a brightly lit room.
4- Ultra-short range projectors now exist. You no longer have to mount them at a distance. You can now place them literally inches from a screen, and they will display a big picture.
5- Even the cheapest projectors can display a greater area than most flat panel smart TVs. For projectors, 150” is par for the course.
6- Projectors are a tried and true technology that’s been in use for over a hundred years, and it’s what we still use in movie theatres. The truest cinematic experience is with a projector, not a flat panel display.
Generally speaking, I believe flat panel TVs stopped being good value years ago. For anything smaller than 40”, I’d rather just get a computer monitor. Anything higher than 40”, projector is the way to go.
