for developer conferences, i typically get all my expenses paid for by the organisers (hotel, travel) or there's sometimes a payment that you can do whatever you want with (usually £500 - £1000), or sometimes both.

academia events seem to be the opposite where nothing is covered and instead I'm the one that has to pay *them* £500 - £1000 fees for various made up costs.

the difference here makes it a no-brainer for me to stick to developer conferences, as someone whose work fits both
