I'm feeling increasingly disappointed with this place tbh
I've been around since 2018 but I only truly became active in summer 2023, and my initial enthusiasm has devolved into sadness
fedi has become a breeding ground for drama and hostility
constant drama
people will air their laundry in public, and then everyone and their dog feels the irresistible urge to comment on something that is frankly none of their business
interpersonal conflicts very quickly escalate into witch hunts
when the kangaroo court has decided that you're guilty, you're better off just leaving and never coming back, regardless of what's true and regardless of how badly you fucked up
hostility
constant micro-aggressions and smug moralizing over things that could be addressed in a friendly manner
like people *demanding* alt text and content warnings, throwing a fit when they don't get their way, and general hostility towards much less significant things
sometimes someone will write alt text for another user (great!), and tack on the "alt4you" hashtag or something to that effect; do I even need to explain the message this sends?
aggressive pushback against change
this happened with quote posting, now with soatok's work on e2ee for DMs
some folks are seeing problems with this network and putting work in to improve the situation
but the solutions are upsetting to some, and the logical response is of course... borderline harassment
all of this was easily ignored at first, but it wears you down over time
if things continue at this pace I will probably just drop out like many before me, and it will have been a death by a thousand cuts
fedi has technical issues in that federation is extremely janky
fedi has accessibility issues in that understanding how it works is not easy
but none of these is the real problem that keeps pushing people away
setting aside those who want to be fed "content" by a recommendation algorithm, the primary issue on here is purely social
the users of this network are actively pushing newcomers away, and I can't stand for this shit anymore
