I don't see property rights as an ideal. It's a natural law.
Every human knows it is wrong to take something from another. It is written on our hearts, though many ignore the law.
If man was perfect, there would be no need to defend one's property. It is man's depravity that forces us to create defenses.
The purpose of government is supposed to be the upholding of these natural laws. But, as Bastiat puts it, man has learned to use government to legalize theft.
But, if a man takes you property, it does not mean that property is any less yours. It means that man has put himself at war with you (Locke). It is your property and you have every right to take action to recover it and restitution for the loss
