My first foster kid, who left us abruptly years ago (while over 18 and fully allowed to do so), just got back in touch with my ex-wife. He said it was partly bc he's afraid of what's happening in the world and we might be heading for WWIII. His brother recently joined the mil.
These poor young folk... what a world we've made for them.
