I've seen the trajectory we've been on since about 1996, which has been very difficult for me. Others were saying this kind of thing as well, most notably James Lovelock.
It's insanity what we're doing.
We should still absolutely try to invest in renewables etc, but I honestly think we're past the point of being able to do anything. There's too much momentum in the system.
I liken our situation to being trapped in a car driven at 80mph by a madman, headed towards a solid brick wall. Instead of rapidly pumping the brakes at any point, the driver has been mashing the accelerator pedal into the floor. The sad part is that even were we to somehow unseat the madman at this point, we're going so quickly and are so close to the wall that most, likely all, the occupants will be killed.
A recent peer reviewed paper "Global Warming in the Pipeline" by Hansen, that has shaken the climatology community, said that we're locked into 2C by 2050, possibly as early as 2034, and that equilibrium global warming for today's GHG level is 10C. I personally think this is about right, from my lay perspective.
We should be preparing for an apocalypse. Elite interests I genuinely believe are happy allowing this to occur because they, erroneously, think their bank balances will allow them to ride it out and that they will be fine
