I think that's only because we don't have enough dedicated human curation. It IS too much work for the average person, but not for someone whose job that is. The problem is as you say — too much work, so let the algos do it, and the result it bad. And if you don’t like the algos, then you get lazy curation and 5 prominent voices everyone follows.

But a dedicated person with good taste would be a better option than either. He could use an AI to filter out garbage, spam, etc. But it’s only useful IMO in eliminating the bad, can’t discover the great.
