I would even argue that people in "authoritarian" states that westerners consider to be some kind is 1984 tier dystopia might actually have far more personal freedom than westerners do simply because of the inefficiency of the institutions there in enforcing its will and cracking down on illegal actions and the laws are mostly only used to punish those who directly confront the ruling elites and never for a vast majority of the population that break them.
