Napoleon Before the Sphinx at Giza" is a painting by the French artist Jean-Léon Gérôme from 1868. The Great Sphinx of Giza was built around 4500 years ago, and since then, it has spent most of its time half-buried in the sands (first "excavated" around 1400 BCE by Pharaoh Thutmose IV). However, by the time of the great French campaign in Egypt (1798–1799/1801), the monument had been mostly covered by sand again for a long period. As we know it today, tourists have been able to admire it since the early 1930s.
