At the very least, on a single instance it's (usually) clear why defederation happens, the rules justifying it, and the ability for the community to talk about it.
A blocklist grants no such visibility. Unless the list says who it pulls from and how it decides what servers to add to the list from its sources, it's a black box of who knows what that spits out a number of servers to block just because there was one big spat two years ago that has since been resolved (or was entirely manufactured by the blocker and since retracted the block and all statements).
