I wonder about the real carbon footprint of trains vs aircraft if the power source is lignite coal. Nuclear power for trains, sure. But what about the mass necessary for sleeper trains? In an airplane you get a seat and a space for luggage. That's it. On a train you need a seat, luggage space, bed, food and bar car... and all that steel. Heavy stuff.
Once the aircraft is at cruise the engines really throttle back. And two hours of flying vs 8 hours of training...
