This outcome seems very in line with the community behind telegram which seems irrationally dedicated to painting "their" service as a privacy-focussed and status-quo-challenging tool. Attacking Telegram apparently feels to it's community the same as attacking the twisted world views discussed on Telegram, hence the reaction.
