Figuring out flavorful, interesting ways for the character to learn new magic spells is hard! I don't just want to do the whole "you do a side quest, you see a wise man, he teaches you a spell" thing. Aside from it being repetitive, it'd be copying from Zelda II too much in a game that's already basically a clone of Zelda II
