I'll never forget sitting there at the TV, wondering why regular programming had been interrupted for what we only knew to be:
- an accident involving a plane,
- in another country,
- on the other side of the world,
- within about 10 minutes of it happening.
Watching interviews later on, even people on the ground weren't exactly sure what had happened until the second plane came. But somehow at the same time, people here on the other side of the world knew that this was important enough to interrupt regular programming. This was also before the president of the United States was informed.
But these thoughts I had were soon swept aside. I was horrified, and I was played well, just as most of the world was.
It took a long time to reconnect with those initial questions, and many others. I remained horrified, but for a completely different reason; I was horrified by the reality of how the world works.
Many of you are here because you want to be free and to have power over your own speech, your own life.
Today is a reminder of the lengths the other side will go to keep that power.
