Senders who find you by other means—like harvesting your address from some third-party—are usually regarded as abusing the system. Social media, by contrast, is designed to make finding other people and sending them unsolicited messages far easier than email, which is part of why people demand opt-in when you layer services on top of that already very permissive structure.
