A lot depends on what you write and what you want from your work.

Self pub works really well with long-form genre fiction as long as it's not YA (or younger) where the primary market depends on a buyer who will is not the reader.

Non-fiction has a harder row to hoe, in large part because the markets are so much smaller, requiring a much larger market penetration.
