Red lipstick as a symbol of defiance goes all the way back to the times of Cleopatra. Across the centuries, women have been accused of being whores while being forced into that role at the same time. The prostitutes in ancient Greece had to wear red lipstick to differentiate them from the “respectable” women. Wearing red lipstick has been a symbol of women's defiance and solidarity with women.
Elizabeth Arden supported the suffragettes who started wearing her red lipstick during the marches of those years. And women marine's uniforms had red piping that matched the colour.
