Folks also seem to have the expectation that if you ground your equipment to some ground rod outside that it somehow acts as an RF sink to prevent RFI in their equipment. If that's what someone thinks they need the ground in their shack for, they are having a problem with their antenna system that needs to be fixed.
Like you said, the ground you add to your station equipment is a safety ground, nothing else.
