this is the only documentation I can find about how Mastodon post visibility works
https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/posting/#privacy but it doesn't explain how it applies to replies -- my feeling is that there are some extra rules about when a reply gets put on your followers' home timelines but I can't find them documented anywhere
