Today I tried out #RevoltChat and #SpacebarChat, free and open source, selfhostable alternatives to #Discord. Neither of them "Just Work", even when following their documentation to the letter.
Revolt's setup doesn't include the voice server, since it is still a WIP, but without it, you can't have voice chat, the whole reason for having such a service in the first place.
Spacebar's setup comes with container images which are about a year old, and when asking about it in their Matrix channel, it turns out they don't support these anymore and that you shouldn't be using them.
Which leaves me to believe that in 2025, #Mumble is still the best voice chat available. The only downside is that the mumble-web project doesn't seem to work with the latest mumble server deployment, so there's no "easy" webui to use.
