I found out they do this because of skintone modifiers. But what's more insane... tracking "🫵" and "🫵🏿" both as "index_pointing_at_the_viewer", or tracking them both as "🫵"? At least in the second way reverse lookups are not impossible if you just strip the skintone before lookup. Not to mention the length difference between the two.
Am I crazy to think an emoji's canonical identifier should just be a string of itself? Why does it have to be an ascii shortcode? I swear every emoji library is crazy.
