Considering that stockholders, not the CEO, are the owners of the company, of course the company should do what they want.

What is wrong in that story is the basic principle of Capitalism: "the owners of a company are those who contributed with money -- the 'capital' -- and they get all its revenue. Those who contribute with their work are employees, and get only whatever the owners choose to pay."
