I think the fundamental philosophical the writers of the constitution made was assuming an adversarial from of democracy, rather than a pluralistic form, was the best way to get to effective governance.

The U.S. was established as an adversarial democracy. The thought being, the constant fight winnows flabby political approaches to problems.

In hindsight, it looks like the theory behind a medieval champion. "Oh, look, you're dead. My side must have been correct."
